The Euro-Mediterranean partners, assembled during the Euro-Mediterranean Ministerial Conference on “Strengthening the Role of Women in Society”, that was held in Istanbul on the 14th and 15th of November 2006, chaired by the Finnish presidency of the EU, agreed to work in a joint framework towards the strengthening of the role of women in the areas of politics, civilian ship, society, economics and culture, and to fight discrimination.
The Euro-Mediterranean partners made the commitment to establish rights in the areas of politics, civilian ship, society, economics and culture to the programme of their discussions, including in the framework of the association agreements, ENPI action plans of as well as programmes and projects set up by the EU and commit themselves to work towards the achievement of the objectives that figure in the framework of actions for the next five years.
A regional programme of 8 million €, of which 5 million € will be used for gender issues and 3 million € for support to the structuring of civil society in the Euro-Mediterranean partnership, is foreseen within the Regional Indicative Programme for the period 2007-2010. With respect to the “Gender Equality” element, the programme aims to implement commitments as laid down in the Action Plan, defined and adopted at the ministerial conference in Istanbul. Regarding the civil society component, focus will be placed on strengthening of capacities, as well as on coordination and networking so as to reinforce capacity for dialogue of the sector and their influence on public authorities.
In the continuation of the working programme established by the conclusions of the Women’s ministerial conference in Istanbul, the general objective of the mission will be to give an assistance in the choice of priority activities to be included in the future regional programme 2007 – 2010 “Equality and civil society” and their implementation.
