Detailed description of project Back

The fruit and horticultural sector was long time neglected in Burundi; only in 1988 when the Government pursued to diversify the export products of the country, attention was paid to the horticulture and fruit sector. However, the socio-political crisis of 1993 first slowed down and finally completely interrupted the development of this promising sector. During 2002, the EC who had been asked by the Government for support to rehabilitate the sector launched a sector study. Following this study EC funds have been committed to the rehabilitation of the sector and in this framework Technical Assistance to elaborate a plan of rehabilitation and re-launch of the horticultural and fruit sector in Burundi is financed.

This plan should take into account the possible assistance schemes of the respective donors and should incorporate all the necessary conditions for the rehabilitation of the sector: production, quality control, infrastructure, logistical support, marketing, organization, training and technical assistance needs etc.

The project is divided into three phases in a first phase the key issues are analysed and adequate solutions are proposed; in a second phase the plan will be finalised and adopted by the Government and in a final phase the implementation of the plan will be launched.
