Detailed description of project Back

The proposed realization of pastoral water works covers mainly the area of the Tilemsi valley, covering the municipalities of Tessalit Aguelhok, Timtaghène, Essouk and Anefif (the region of Kidal). This is a livestock area par excellence. Periodically, transhumances from the regions of Gao and Timbuktu and from South Algeria come to seek pasture for their herds of camels and goats, especially during the cold, winter season.

The project consists of:

  • Study of geological and geophysical locations of about twelve (12) drilling sites in the Tilemsi valley and its surroundings;
  • Realization of about 20 deep boreholes of which an anticipated 8 positive. The success rate is related to natural conditions and may vary more or less depending on the depths to reach and static levels;
  • Completion of tank wells on the positive drilling sites with useful static levels (<50m);
  • Works supervision;
  • Support for management of water points by local communities.

The geographical distribution of boreholes is determined by patterns of pastoral developments made by the Regional Assembly of Kidal and based on the mapping of water points and pasture needs expressed by local authorities in June 2009. Settlements will however remain dependent on feasibility constraints determined by preliminary geological and geophysical studies.

The expected results are:

  • Improvement of water resources available to the nomads and their livestock;
  • Better use of currently inaccessible pastures and reduced environmental pressure on the Adrar’s pastures;
  • Improving the quality of livestock and the potential income of local livestock producers.

The Local Authorities are the beneficiaries of the program. The Regional Assembly of Kidal will be in charge of transferring the water points to the local authorities who, after training, will be responsible for setting up management committees for their maintenance and servicing.
